ABOUT MIAMI, OK
Miami was officially incorporated in 1895, but its story began earlier when it was founded by W.C. Lykins in 1891. Lykins, along with a group of investors, petitioned the federal government to create a townsite in Indian Territory, which was granted — a rare event at the time. This made Miami the first town in Oklahoma to be established under a federal townsite charter.
Its growth was fueled by mining activity in the Tri-State Mining District, making it a hub for lead and zinc production. During the early 1900s, the town thrived economically thanks to this mining boom and the railroad that connected it to larger cities.
Miami proudly sits along the famous Route 66, and its historic Coleman Theatre is a beloved landmark. Built in 1929, this Spanish Colonial-style theater once hosted vaudeville shows and remains in operation today, hosting performances, tours, and events. Miami’s Main Street retains its nostalgic appeal with antique shops, cafes, and vintage signage that reflect the town’s connection to America’s “Mother Road.”
Miami is deeply connected to the Nine Tribes that call Ottawa County home, including the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, for which the city is named. The region celebrates this rich cultural heritage through tribal events, powwows, and educational institutions. The Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO), located in Miami, also plays a central role in local cultural and academic life.
